Last week I spoke on a panel for The Baltimore Chapter of the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources (NAAAHR http://naaahrbaltimore.org). I co-presented with Sandy Rawls, Director of Trans-United on "Gender Variance 101: Understanding Transgendered Employees in the Workplace". We had a great time! It was lively, interesting, and some very poignant issues and questions were raised. For example:
- Did you know Transgender people are 10 times as likely to be murdered as anyone else?
- Someone transitioning in the workplace isn’t the only one adjusting change (and likely experiencing emotional distress). Employees who work with the individual transitioning may feel anxiety in addition to other feelings. Their experiences are just as valid and should be considered and addressed proactively rather than reactively
- What are some of the roles human resource professionals play in this process?
- The business case for Transgender inclusion is the same for all other types of employee diversity: focus on getting the best people for the needs of the organization, disregarding factors that have nothing to do with their ability to do the job and their results
